Aruba | Curaçao | Sint Maarten | Bonaire | Saba | Statia

Between the late 1960s and the mid-1980s, an informal community of musicians across the Dutch Caribbean islands of Aruba, Curaçao, and Sint Maarten created music that crossed stylistic boundaries. For nearly three decades, they shared stages and ideas across islands, forming a close-knit network shaped by common histories and identities, while rarely receiving wider recognition. Their recordings were released locally, often in small runs, and many were never properly archived. As a result, much of this music, and the stories it carries, faded from view. Antiyano Progresivo is dedicated to these artists, many of whom were well known locally, but whose more unconventional music remained largely unheard.

Despite a history of slavery, trauma and oppression, this part of the Caribbean remains united by strong cultural bonds. Music has played a crucial role in restoring pride and identity, helping people define themselves on their own terms. Yet the legacy of colonial rule meant that many local and grassroots musical expressions were rarely documented, archived, or taught. Consequently, younger generations often lack access to the cultural knowledge and pride carried by their elders. Their music reflects a collective history that took shape across different islands and in different moments, unfolding largely beyond the mainstream.
