Cover painting is "The Prospector 1889" by [a17875890 (1857 - 1942) - Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney The songs and ballads included in this collection come from the repertory of the men and women of the mining industry - some are old songs and some are new. Not all the items fall into the usual definitions of folk song. However, the songs are typical of the musical traditions of the time - the songs of the goldfields were strongly influenced by the tunes and styles of the British Music Hall as well as the then popular flood of so called 'parlour room' songs. The songs from the coalfields were particularly influenced by the traditions of the various nationalities that lived in the coal towns. The Welsh, Scots and Northern England miners had the most influence and their effect on dialect, customs and superstitions are still obvious. The influences on Australian industrial song are many -music hall, parlour, dance tunes, popular music and art song - and it is indeed interesting to trace these influences in particular songs. Whatever the influence and whatever the result, the songs from the mining industry of yesterday have a basic honesty that labels them as 'folk song'. Very little work has been done in the field of collection and research on Australian traditional or contemporary industrial song. My investigations only scratched at the surface. I am certain that a wealth of material awaits the diligent collector who has the resources to spend more than a few weeks in the mining towns.
