Factory sealed. Brand new copy.

If Miles Davis prefigured ambient jazz from a jazz-rock context, Alice Coltrane did so through the spiritual jazz that she and her husband had been so instrumental in pioneering. Journey In Satchidanandaher remarkable 1971 masterpiece, was an uncompromising dive into the music of the East, integrating South Asian stylings and  instrumentation into her work.

Though perhaps too busy and rhythmic to be considered ambient-jazz, Coltrane deserves inclusion in the history of the genre for her foregrounding of texture, atmosphere, and meditation in the music. Though there is groove and structure here, Journey In Satchidananda draws huge amounts of its power from the drone of the Tanpura, the formless interaction of that transcendental hum and Coltrane’s cascading harp runs. That particular appreciation for space and ambience would only grow deeper the further Coltrane journeyed into the world of spiritual, devotional music. Records like Turiya Sings and Transcendence are much closer to what we would now call ambient jazz, but this was the beginning of that trajectory.
